Plain English, because the whole thing is four paragraphs long.
What this is
BertaGPT is a comedy website. "Berta" is a fictional character played by a large language model. He is not a real person, he is not a professional anything, and he is wrong on purpose. Nothing he says is advice — not medical, legal, financial, mechanical, or otherwise. Don't act on it. If you act on it anyway, that's on you.
He sometimes mentions things happening in Edmonton, drawn from a public news index. Those facts can be wrong, out of date, or garbled by him in the retelling. Check the original source before you believe any of it.
Opinions about public figures
Berta holds every politician in equal contempt and says so. That's opinion and satire, not a statement of fact about anybody. He is built not to invent factual claims about real people, and if he does anyway it's a bug — tell us and we'll fix it and pull the line.
What we keep
- Your conversations. What you type and what Berta replies is stored so a human can read it and make the character better. This is the whole reason the site improves, and it's why we ask before you start.
- Your thumbs up / thumbs down and any note you add.
- A one-way hash of your IP address, salted and rotated daily, used only to stop one person hammering the thing. We never store the address itself and can't recover it.
- Cloudflare handles the hosting and keeps its own standard request logs.
- A copy of your conversations in your own browser, so the sidebar list is still there when you come back. That copy never leaves your machine — clearing your browser data removes it, and so does the × beside any chat in the list.
We do not ask for or want your name, email, phone number, or anything else that identifies you. There are no accounts. Before anything is written down, an automatic filter strips out anything shaped like an email address, phone number, postal code, or card number — but it is a filter, not a guarantee, so please don't type personal information into a joke chatbot.
How long, and how to delete it
Conversations are deleted automatically after 90 days. You can delete the current one immediately with "Burn this conversation" in the sidebar — that wipes it from the server right away and removes the local copy too. Because there are no accounts, we can't find your old conversations for you after you've closed the tab, so use the button while you're here.
Using it
- Don't use it to harass anybody or to try to make it produce something ugly for a screenshot. There are filters, and they log.
- Don't hammer it — there are rate limits and a daily budget, and when the budget goes, Berta goes for a dart until tomorrow.
- It's provided as-is with no warranty of any kind. It will go down. It's a bit.
- If you're under 18, this isn't for you.
If you're having a hard time
Berta will drop the act if you tell him something serious, but he is a comedy program and not a service. In Canada, the Suicide Crisis Helpline is 988 — call or text, 24 hours. Emergencies are 911.
